The 6 Things to Look for When Choosing a Newborn Photographer

This precious little thing has taken over all of your thoughts, your time, your sleep, your emotions, and your house! And despite all this, you would move heaven and earth for them, and trusting them with someone else isn’t even on your radar yet. Having twins myself, I 100% understand the sweet struggle 😉

Choosing the right photographer to capture these first precious moments is a decision that holds immense emotional value. It’s not just about finding someone with a camera, it’s about trusting someone to document the delicate beginnings of a brand new journey. Here are six crucial things to consider when selecting a newborn photographer.

  1. Specialization and Experience. First and foremost, look for a photographer who specializes in newborn photography. This genre requires specific skills, not just in photography but in handling newborns with utmost care. An experienced newborn photographer understands the importance of safety, the patience required, and the best ways to soothe and pose your baby safely.

2. Portfolio Quality. A photographer’s portfolio is a window into their style and skill level. Look for a variety of shots in their portfolio that resonate with your personal taste. Pay attention to the details in the images, the softness of the lighting, the creativity of the poses, and the overall mood and emotion the photos convey. This will help ensure their style matches the vision you have for your newborn’s photos.

3. Client Reviews and Testimonials. Feedback from past clients can be incredibly insightful. Look for reviews that mention how the photographer handled the babies, their professionalism, the quality of the final images, and their overall satisfaction. Positive testimonials can give you peace of mind and confidence in your choice.

4. Safety Practices. Safety is paramount in newborn photography. Inquire about the photographer’s approach to ensuring the baby’s safety throughout the session. Are they trained in newborn safety? Do they have assistance during shoots? How do they sanitize props and the studio, if they have one? A responsible photographer will have clear safety protocols in place.

5. Flexibility and Patience. Newborn photography cannot be rushed. Look for a photographer who understands that babies have their own schedules, requiring feedings, changes, and cuddles. A great newborn photographer is flexible and patient, willing to take the time needed to capture the perfect shot without causing stress to the baby or the parents.

6. Investment and Packages. Understand the photographer’s pricing structure and what’s included in their packages. Are there any additional costs for props, digital files, or prints? While cost is an important factor, it shouldn’t be the only consideration. Remember, these photos are an investment in memories that will last a lifetime.

Selecting a newborn photographer is a personal and significant decision. It’s about finding a balance between artistic style, safety, and the emotional connection you feel with the person who will capture one of the most important moments in your life.
