Not only is it low, but sometimes it is very yellow, so being able to know how to use a flash well (many photographers are terrified of flash!), but also in a way that does not distract the birthing person, is definitely a challenge. Birth is unpredictable, as well. You never know when it is going to happen or how–unlike a wedding, which is on an assigned day and very easy to prepare for, as every moment of the day is planned ahead of time. This is not the same with birth! To add to this, you not only have to be able to quickly and expertly adjust your settings in an environment that may be difficult, and know how to work a professional camera, but you also need to be able to work angles that may change quickly. You want the photos to look artistic as well as flattering.
Professional birth photographers also invest not only in top-of-the-line equipment (often totaling over $10,000) that must be replaced every 2-4 years, but also in continuous training to hone their craft. Becoming certified as a birth photographer also takes quite a bit of time and expense (about $1300 for the certification, not including all the outside education as well). They are experts in lighting, composition, and storytelling, ensuring that every image they capture is a work of art that tells a unique and compelling story. Additionally, the time commitment involved in being on call 24/7 around the due date, the emotional intensity of the experience, and the post-processing work all contribute to the overall cost. And imagine where your birth photographer is coming from–they have to stay within the area once you are around 36 weeks until baby is born. If they have a family, they will bring a second car wherever they go in case they get a call. They need to locate a babysitter at the drop of a hat and pay them decently for a last-minute job. They need to have their car full of gas and ready to go at all times. They often are woken up in the middle of the night and could be at a birth over 24 hours, depending on the labor. Birth is very unpredictable, tedious, and yes, absolutely amazing and worth it! But it is a lifestyle, and every birth photographer ought to be paid fairly.
